median Nerve Conduction Study in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Abstract
Authors had performed median nerve conduction study on 38 upper extremities of 23 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and 28 upper extremities of 25 normal control using conventional nerve conduction technique. Statistical analysis was performed
using
Student's t-test.
The results were as follows;
1) There were significant statistical differences in terminal latency(P¡´0.01¡µ, forearm nerve conduction velocity(P¡´0.05¡µ, and amplitude of compound muscle action potential(P¡´0.01¡µ of median motor nerve between control group and patients
group
with carpal tunnel syndrome.
2) There were significant statistical differences between control group and carpal tunnel syndrome patients group in latency, nerve conduction velocity, amplitude of action potential in finger-wrist and palm-wrist segment of median sensory
nerve.
3) Electromyography on 25 abductor pollicis brevis muscles form the patient revealed denervation potentials in 15 cases (60%).
4) Duration of diseases had no statistically significant effect on latency, nerve conduction velocity, and amplitude of action potential in patents with carpal tunnel syndrome.
